We recently shared exciting news about Virtual Job Coach on-demand. Today, we’re talking about informal networking. It’s a great way to find a job!
What is Informal Networking?
Most people cringe when they hear the word, “networking.” We think of a large group of people we don’t know trying to make themselves look and feel important. This can be stressful for most people. For people who have social anxiety, it can be terrifying.
But more people find jobs through networking than any other way. So networking is important when you’re looking for a job. There are ways to make it less scary. Informal networking is a low-stress way to find a job. Informal networking just means talking with people you know about your job search. It is easy to do if you are prepared. Here are some tips for informal networking.
Make an “Elevator Pitch”
An elevator pitch is a short description of who you are and what you are looking for. You should be able to say it in the time a short elevator ride takes. Your pitch should:
- take 15-30 seconds to say.
- say briefly what kind of job you are looking for.
- include your main talents and skills.
- ask for help in a specific way. You could ask if the person knows companies that are hiring. You could ask them to keep you in mind if they hear of any jobs. Or you could just ask for job search advice.
Here’s an example of someone giving their elevator pitch.

Be Prepared
Informal networking can happen anytime, anywhere. You will be ready for it if you prepare. For example, practice your elevator pitch often. You will feel more confident when the time comes to use it. You can practice with friends, family members, or other trusted adults.
Also, be ready to give your contact information. You want the person to get back to you quickly and easily. You might want to print business cards. You can buy special paper at office supply stores. It usually comes with a template so you can create your own cards. You should include your name, email address, and phone number.
Remember: more people find jobs through networking than any other way. Networking does not have to be stressful or scary. Informal networking can happen any time, any place. If you prepare ahead, you will be ready.
