This week in Hot Topics, we’re talking about phone anxiety. To many people, talking on the phone may seem like no big deal. But for people with social anxiety, it can be terrifying. It’s even more stressful when you’re calling a potential employer.
Question—
I have terrible phone call anxiety. Can I still look for a job?
Answer—
Yes, you can! Many people struggle with talking on the phone. Severe anxiety can also be part of a disability or mental health condition. The good news is that job searching today is mostly done online.
Online Options
You can apply for jobs on company websites and email your resume. You can message hiring managers on platforms like LinkedIn. If you need to follow up, you can often send a short email instead of calling.
Tips for Phone Calls
If a phone call is required, here are some tips to help reduce anxiety.
- Write a short script ahead of time. Practice it a few times with someone you trust.
- Take deep breaths, listen to soothing music, or find other ways to destress before your call.
- Make sure you are in a quiet, comfortable location. You don’t want interruptions to add to your anxiety.
- Be ready to take notes during the call. Trying to talk, listen, and remember at the same time can be stressful.
Let employers know what works best for you. If you prefer email or video chat, you can share that. You have the right to ask for reasonable supports. Remember, being clear and professional matters more than the format.
