Hot Topic: Handling Career Planning Stress

May is Mental Health Awareness month. So this week in Hot Topics, we’re talking about career planning stress. Figuring out your career path can be overwhelming. We’re here to help!

Question

When I think about choosing a career, I get overwhelmed. Where do I even start?

Answer

You are not alone. Choosing a career is a big decision. That can lead to career planning stress. Here are some tips to help.

Start Small

Career planning has many steps. But they don’t have to happen all at once. Start small. Go at your own pace. If you start to feel overwhelmed, take a step back. Then try to focus on the very next step you have to do—even if it’s a small one.

Focus on Your Likes and Dislikes

Start by thinking about what you enjoy. What are your favorite activities? When do you feel calm, focused, or proud of what you’re doing? These are clues to the kinds of work that might fit you well. For example, if you love being in nature, you might consider being an environmental scientist, a park ranger, or even a landscape designer.

It’s also okay to think about what you don’t want. That helps narrow things down. For example, if you don’t like loud places, you might look for quiet jobs or remote work. If you like helping people, look at jobs in caregiving, education, or customer service.

Take Your Time

You don’t need all the answers right away. Exploring jobs is part of the journey. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Research jobs online.
  • Talk to people you know about their work.
  • Check out our Hear from a Peer posts. They feature self-advocates talking about their jobs.
  • Volunteer. It lets you try out different kinds of work that might be right for you.

One step at a time is still progress. You’re allowed to try something, change your mind, and try again.
