Hear from a Peer: Policy Fellow Charles Baird

We’re kicking off a new series: Hear from a Peer. We’ll chat with self-advocates about their careers, job search journeys and more. You’ll learn valuable tips about finding the right job for you. This week, we’re talking with Charles Baird from Houston, Texas.

Charles is a Policy Fellow at Disability Belongs. His job is part of a leadership program that trains people to work in disability policy and advocacy. Charles works from home on projects that help people with disabilities.

What Does Charles Do?

Charles helps with rules and laws that affect people with disabilities across the country. He is learning new skills, meeting important people, and making a difference. Charles is also a self-published author. He wrote a book about people who were found guilty of crimes and executed. But later, facts showed they might have been innocent. Read his book here.

What Does He Like Most About His Job?

Charles loves helping people. He says, “I like the people and the causes I was working for…At some point, I’ll be asked ‘what good did you do?’ and I’m hoping I’ll be able to point to this work.”

What Is Hard About the Job?

Laws and rules change a lot, especially right now. For Charles, who has autism, this can be tough. He can handle some change, but too much at once makes things difficult.

How Did He Get the Job?

Charles found the job on LinkedIn—but it took a lot of work! He applied to thousands of jobs. Only 5% of employers replied, and only 1% gave him an interview.
